LIVESTOCK AND FISHERIES THEMATIC AREA OF RESEARCH
The Livestock thematic area contributes to the attainment of the overall institutional purpose through the attainment of its purpose of generating and promoting livestock knowledge, information, and technologies that respond to clients’ demands and opportunities. This purpose will be delivered through the attainment of the following five results:

Technologies and innovations for demand-driven livestock and fisheries products value chains generated and promoted;

Markets and marketing strategies for livestock and fisheries products value chains developed and promoted;

Policy options for enhancing demand-driven livestock and fisheries products value chains facilitated and advocated;

The capacity for implementing integrated enhancements is high.

Availability of knowledge, information, and technologies on livestock product value chains research enhanced.
The Livestock and Fishery Department is an integral part of the CARI research regime and has the mandate to conduct applied, adaptive, and strategic research in developing and providing good quality genetic stocks and quality feed sources and ingredients to livestock and fish farmers in Liberia to increase production and improve productivity.
LIVESTOCK UNIT
The unit is divided into three smaller units, Swine, Small Ruminants, and Beef Cattle, that are stocked and fully functional with support from the Institute.

THE FISHERY UNIT
Like the Livestock Unit, the Fishery Unit, is an integral part of the CARI research regime with the mandate to conduct applied, adaptive, and strategic research in developing and providing good quality and adaptable freshwater fish spices that fish farmers can use in Liberia for profitable production. The Unit has four ponds that are fully stocked and functional. The Unit is monitoring the growth of two species of tilapia, Nile, and Zilli; and another tropical fish called Heterotic.
